Tucked away in the lush hills of Seongbuk-dong lies the breathtaking Gilsangsa Temple complex, a serene and captivating Buddhist sanctuary that is sure to leave you spellbound.
I had the pleasure of exploring this stunning temple area during last year's Buddha's birthday celebration in 2023.
Despite my profound experience, I can't believe that I forgot to create a page dedicated to this magnificent temple.
So, allow me to share with you some of the awe-inspiring features that make Gilsangsa Temple such a remarkable destination...
Since its establishment in 1997, Gilsangsa has become a beloved spot for locals and tourists due to its seamless integration with its natural surroundings.
The temple's peaceful environment invites visitors to explore its grounds and soak in the stunning views.
Gilsangsa Temple, housed in a unique location, has an exciting history. It was once an upscale restaurant called Daewongak, which was generously donated to Venerable Bupjeong, a Buddhist monk, who transformed it into a temple in 1997. This fusion of temple and restaurant features makes it an unusual place to visit.
The heart of Gilsangsa is the Geukrakjeon, also known as the Hall of Ultimate Bliss. It enshrines the Amitabha Buddha and serves as the main hall of the temple.
The hall's serene ambiance invites visitors to contemplation and reverence. The Geukrakjeon is a must-visit place for anyone seeking spiritual solace and peace of mind.
Gilsang Seonwon, the Zen Center of the temple, is dedicated to meditation practice. It offers a space for inner reflection and mindfulness, making it an ideal place for those seeking to improve their mental and emotional well-being.
Additionally, there's a House of Silence, which is open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, where visitors can engage in quiet meditation. This helps visitors find a sense of calm and tranquility amid their busy lives.

This fusion of a restaurant-turned-temple makes Gilsangsa quite distinctive and a popular tourist attraction. Visitors often marvel at how the beauty of the temple's architecture and the serenity of the surrounding natural landscape perfectly complement each other.
Overall, Gilsangsa is a testament to the generosity of its founder and the beauty of Korean culture.
