Location

Wolsongjeong is a stunning location amid a beautiful pine forest in Uljin-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do.

It is located on a hillside in Songrim, which can be easily accessed by taking the Donghae Expressway from the Gangneung Interchange to Donghae City.

Once you reach Donghae City, follow National Route 7, which will take you through Samcheok City and lead you to Uljin. As you continue along National Route 7 towards Yeongdeok, you will find the entrance to Wolsongjeong across the road.

Historical Records

According to historical records, the Wolsongjeong pavilion was first established in 1326 by Joonmusa Park Suk during the reign of King Chungseon.

It is said that during this time, the history of Anchu recorded that the pavilion's charm would rival that of the famous Hansong and Wolsong pavilions.

The pavilion is in a pine forest named Wolsong, derived from four Taoist gods who used to play and pass by the area.

In addition to this, historical records of the old county suggest that during the Silla Dynasty, four hwarangs named Yeongrang, Soolrang, Namseok, and Ansang used to play in the pine forest at night, hence the name Wolsongjeong.

It is also said that Wolsong trees were brought from Yueguo, which is why the pavilion is called Wolsong.

During the mid-Joseon Dynasty, County Magistrate Park Won-jong reconstructed Wolsongjeong during the reign of King Yeonsan. However, after many years, it became dilapidated and collapsed.

In 1933, Hwang Manyoung and Jeon Jamun from the village rebuilt it, but the Japanese army forcibly demolished it, leaving only the site.

In 1969, a group of overseas Koreans from Uljin, including Kim Jung-mun, Park Seon-gyu, and Kim Ik-man, rebuilt the pavilion. However, it was too different from the original, so it was dismantled and restored to its current form in 1980.

Former President Choi Gyu-ha wrote the plaque, and the pavilion completed maintenance work on the floor area in 2008.
