Historical Roots

The Hongneung Arboretum is located in Seoul, South Korea, and is an exceptional location for those who love nature and history.

The arboretum was established in 1922, making it the oldest arboretum in Korea. It was initially created as an experimental forest on the burial mound of Queen Myeong-Seong.

Queen Myeong-Seong is a central figure in Korean history, as she played a significant role in the country's modernization efforts. Her tragic death at the hands of Japanese assassins in 1895 is an important event that marked the end of the Joseon Dynasty.

The nursery has a vast collection of diverse tree species, making it a perfect place for research and conservation efforts. It is divided into different sections, such as coniferous trees, deciduous trees, and rare trees, among others.

Visitors can stroll through the arboretum and enjoy the beautiful natural scenery, learn about the different tree species, and appreciate the effort that goes into preserving and studying them.

During the Korean War, most of the forest was destroyed, but in the late 1960s, significant efforts were made to restore it. Today, the forest is divided into various zones based on the types of trees found in each zone.

These zones include the conifer zone, broadleaf zone, shrubbery zone, foreign tree zone, herbal medicinal zone, and alpine plant zone.

As of the end of 2002, the forest covered 44 hectares of land and was home to 157 classes and 2,035 species of plants or over 20,000 plant organisms.

Of these, 836 were native to Korea, 388 were from abroad, and 811 were herbs.

The Hongneung Arboretum in Seoul has become a popular destination for those who want to learn more about Korea's history and experience the beauty of its natural surroundings.

It is a witness to the country's commitment to preserving its cultural and environmental heritage for future generations.
