Name Origin:

The center is named after Sejong the Great, the fourth King of the Joseon Dynasty. Hangeul marked his reign with significant cultural and scientific advancements, including creating the Korean script.

Sejong the Great was born in 1397 and ascended to the throne in 1418. During his reign, which lasted until 1450, he made many significant contributions to Korean culture and society.

One of his most notable achievements was the creation of the Korean alphabet, now known as Hangeul.

Sejong the Great is still widely revered in Korea today as a visionary leader and a champion of the arts and sciences.

History

In 1972, the Seoul National Hall was unfortunately destroyed in a fire. To continue the cultural legacy of the previous structure, the City Council of Seoul commissioned the construction of a new venue.

The Sejong Center was built in 1978 and was under the control of the Special City of Seoul for 20 years. However, in 1999, the center was handed over to a foundation governed by civilians with a strong passion for the arts.

This led to the center's massive success. It even hosted the Miss Universe pageant in 1980.

The Sejong Center's design is a beautiful fusion of Korean national symbols and Western architectural styles. It was named after Sejong the Great, the fourth ruling King of the Joseon Dynasty.

On September 23, 2012, the Seoul Metropolitan Government began a trial period of a designated 550-meter section of Sejong-ro as pedestrian-only, allowing cyclists.

This section includes the road from the Gwanghwamun three-way intersection, along Gwanghwamun Plaza, in front of the Sejong Center, and up to the Sejong-ro intersection.
