Eight Scenic Spots of the Eastern Seacoast

Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism have influenced Korean traditional religion. For scholars in the Joseon Dynasty, enjoying nature was not only about traveling or sightseeing but also about religious training.

Gwandong Palgyeong (관동 팔경 or "eight scenic spots of the eastern seacoast") is a collection of eight beautiful spots located along the eastern seacoast of Korea.

The spots or views include Chongseojeong, Samilpo, Cheongganjeong, Naksansa, Gyeongpodae, Jukseoru, Mangyangjeong, and Weolsongjeong. Two of them are now in North Korea.

The pavilions in Chongseojeong, Cheongganjeong, Mangyangjeong, and Weolsongjeong offer breathtaking views of the landscapes.

After visiting these spots, Jeong Cheol, a Korean poet and politician, wrote an epic titled "Gwandong Byeolgok," considered one of the most beautiful poems in the history of Korean literature.

If you plan to try this itinerary, the most suitable mode of transportation is by car.

You can visit the South Korean spots along National Route 7. Some stops are serviced by train, while others can be reached by express bus from Seoul or other bus terminals.

Naksansa Temple

Naksansa Temple is a historic Buddhist temple complex located on the slopes of Naksan Mountain in Gangwon Province, South Korea.
